Besides the cut-offs, which certainly appears in line with BioPorto’s patent, it is firmly established that;
– AKI is a common problem with increasing incidents. It is associated with high levels of serious complications, costs and mortality.
– The current Diagnosis of AKI is primarily based on serum creatinine, which rises only after about 50% of renal function is already lost.
– Biomarkers are required for the early diagnosis of AKI before serious and irreversible damage.
– Early detection of AKI would prevent kidney damage and further accelerate a timely intervention.
– NGAL is one of the first proteins induced in the kidney and easily detected in urine or serum soon after AKI.
– Urine NGAL is a marker of tubular damage.
– Many studies have suggested the diagnostic utility of NGAL as an early marker of acute kidney injury in a wide variety of clinical settings in children and adults.
– NGAL levels are proportional to the degree of renal injury in the absence of sepsis.
– High levels of NGAL is associated with poor outcome of AKI.
– NGAL allows the differential diagnosis between intrinsic and prerenal AKI.
